Though bigotry is a regular theme in Marvel’s X-Men and mutant-related titles, many of the mutant characters rise above to become heroes. Vance Astrovik, aka Marvel Boy and later Justice, faced that negativity at his home but didn’t let it stop him from helping people.

He was created by Don Heck and Gerry Conway as a mutant with telekinetic powers and the ability to fly at high speeds. He was introduced in Giant-Size Defenders #5 (July 1975) and since then he has been a member of multiple hero teams, including New Warriors and Avengers.

Vance was a teenager when he learned that the Guardians of the Galaxy were secretly protecting him because they believed Korvac would target him in the future. He met Vance Astro, the Guardian who was an alternate future version of himself, and the shock trigged his mutant powers.

Sadly, Vance’s home life was unhealthy because his father was abusive and that violence just got worse once his mutant powers developed. He ran away from home, adopted the name Marvel Boy, and started his hero journey alongside the Thing, who was taking a break from the Fantastic Four.

Later Marvel Boy tried to join the Avengers, but Captain America told him he needed to gain more experience first. That setback led to an invitation from Night Thrasher and Nova to join their new team, the New Warriors. He accepted and became one of their core members. It was during this period that Vance met Firestar and the two started a romantic relationship.

Unfortunately, his happy life took a bad turn when he returned home, and his anti-mutant father hit him again. With years of pent up anger and growing abilities, Vance defended himself by using his powers and unintentionally killed his father. His mother pressed charges and Vance was arrested for murder.

After serving his time, Vance was released on good behavior and his future became brighter. Older and wizened by his experiences, Vance changed his superhero name to Justice. He rejoined New Warriors, was often a leader in the group, and got engaged to Firestar.
