The Gold Digger comic book series written and drawn by Fred Perry has been published by Antarctic Press since the early 1990s. Featuring elements of Indiana Jones and Final Fantasy, the title follows Gina Babette Diggers, an archeologist, scientist, and teacher. She explores the world’s ancient and strange histories, encountering magical and science fiction-style worlds, societies, and species. She is often joined on her adventures by family, friends, and students.
Perry has said that his military service during the First Gulf War inspired the initial idea for Gold Digger. Using his own experiences and interests, Perry has filled the book with content on the military, science, pop culture topics like TV shows, books, and superheroes, as well as references to computer games, manga, even memes.
The title debuted as a one-shot in Antarctic’s Mangazine in 1991, then a four-issue limited series was published in ’92 and ’93. After that it became an ongoing black and white series, and transitioned to a color series in ’99. Starting in 2011, he restructured the book to tell self-contained stories to make it more accessible to new readers.
The combination of the regular series, annuals, connected limited series, and special issues makes Gold Digger the longest running US comic book written and drawn by its original creator.
