Sojourner “Jo” Mullein is a member of the Green Lantern Corps in a sector so far from Oa that it doesn’t even have a number but instead is known as “Far Sector.” She was created by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell and made her first appearance in Far Sector #1 (January 2020).
Jo grew up in a working class family where her parents struggled to make ends meet. On September 11, 2001, Jo and her father witnessed the attack on the World Trade Center, and the pair rushed to help injured survivors. That day instilled in her the desire to help others and make the world a better place.
She attended Princeton University and served in the US military before becoming a police officer. After witnessing her partner beat a suspect to death, she reported him to internal affairs and testified against him in court. It was then that she was approached by a Guardian to become a Green Lantern.
Her first job with the Green Lanterns was at The City Enduring where three previously warring races were relocated after they had destroyed their systems. Inhabitants were given a drug called Emotion Exploit to make them more docile and keep their rivalry from causing more violence. But, not long after Jo arrived, the first murder in 500 years occurred and she had to find the killer.
Jo and fellow Peace Division officers found the killer, but before she was brought to justice, she was killed. People started protesting Emotion Exploit and Jo learned that a riot was orchestrated by the first murder victim’s wife. During the investigation, Jo learned about the secret drug, Switchoff, which counters the effects of Emotion Exploit. She found an underground web of drug manufacturing, addiction, the involvement of council members, and attempts to build a resistance against the Green Lanterns.
A melee ensued, and when her power was down to 20%, Jo fought the City Enduring’s fleet, and boarded the main ship. Rather than engage in more violence, she gave an impassioned speech that convinced the ship’s commander to stop the violence and help find a resolution to the Emotion Exploit drug.
