Disney’s 1957 live-action film Johnny Tremain was based on the book by Esther Forbes, and for many children a viewing of it marked the first time they could personally relate to the American Revolution.
Set in Boston between 1773 and 1775, the story centers on a young apprentice silversmith who injures his hand. With his potential career ruined, Tremain gets in greater trouble when he finds himself accused of a crime he did not commit. With the help of Paul Revere and Josiah Quincy, the youth defends himself. Johnny eventually finds himself drawn into the Revolutionary War, as well as an exploration of human rights.
While Johnny Tremain was popular in its theatrical release, the film gained its greatest fame by being shown on the Disney TV show. The film was also made available for use in schools. Directed by Robert Stevenson, the film features Hal Stalmaster, Luana Patten, Jeff York and Sebastian Cabot.
The merchandise based on the movie included books, costumes, premiums and records. Johnny Tremain appears in Four Color Comics #822 (Paul Revere’s ride) and #874 (Old Ironsides movie).
