The name Super-Chief has been used by several DC characters, including three heroes and one villain. The character was originally created by Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino in All-Star Western #117 (March 1961).

During the yearlong 52 series, writers Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, and Mark Waid, and artist Eddy Barrows introduced a new incarnation of the character. Jon Standing Bear debuted in 52 #22 (October 2006) as a veteran and ex-con who was traveling to Metropolis. When a man tried to sexually assault a girl on the bus, Jon threw the man through the window.

It was revealed that both his father and grandfather had been disappointed in Jon because they believed that he neglected his Native American heritage and duties to his family. When his estranged father died, his grandfather told Jon that he needed to take on the duty of Super-Chief since he was the last of the older man’s line. Jon was given an amulet containing a radioactive meteorite fragment that granted him superstrength, speed, and limited ability to fly.

As Super-Chief Jon joined Firestorm to form a new Justice League of America. Their first mission was to stop a chronal disruption caused by the robot Skeets, who had become a villain. Super-Chief was killed during the confrontation and Jon was transported to an otherworldly place. There he met an ancestor named Flying Stag who scolded him for not understanding the power of the amulet before he used it.

Jon Standing Bear returned later as one of the Black Lanterns during the Blackest Night series.
