Jody Houser is a comic book writer who is known for the 2016 Faith comic series and for her work in comic adaptations based on movies, TV shows, and video games. She studied English at the University of Miami, then she earned a Masters in Fine Arts in creative writing at Emerson College. Early in her career, Houser created and self-published the webcomic Cupcake POW! from 2010 to 2015.
She wrote the story “Everwell” for the anthology book, Womanthology: Heroic, which led to writing more stories for a variety of anthology series. Houser co-wrote the Orphan Black limited series at IDW Publishing in 2015, marking her first multi-issue foray in comics.
A year later, Houser started writing the Faith limited series, telling the adventures of Valiant’s pop culture-obsessed hero Faith Herbert. The successful limited series was turned into an ongoing title, and Houser was praised for writing Faith as a funny, intelligent, and compassionate hero. She would later write sequel series, Faith & The Future Force and Faith: Dreamside.
Houser worked with DC, writing the Mother Panic series about vigilante Violet Paige, who is part of the Young Animal imprint. In 2017 and 2018, she and Steve Orlando co-wrote two Justice League of America one-shots, then they launched the Supergirl series. She became the ongoing writer on Supergirl and wrote the Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy miniseries.
She has written several Star Wars series for Marvel, including the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story based on the movie and Star Wars: Thrawn based on the antagonist in Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy novels. Houser wrote the Star Wars: TIE Fighter and Star Wars: Yoda limited series, and the adaptation of the Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series.
Her work in comic adaptions also includes multiple ongoing and limited series about Doctor Who at Titan, and Stranger Things and Critical Role books at Dark Horse Comics. She was also the writer of the ongoing Star Trek: Year Five book at IDW.
