Spot may have a comical name but as a supervillain he can be a crafty foe. Al Milgrom and Herbe Trimpe co-created the Marvel villain who most often comes up against Spider-Man and Daredevil. He was introduced as Dr. Jonathan Ohnn in The Spectacular Spider-Man #94 (September 1984), then became Spot soon after.
Dr. Ohnn was working for Kingpin trying to replicate the Cloak’s radiation levels to mimic his abilities. One night while he was working late, Ohnn created a solid black, circular portal, which consequently created a blackout in the city and destabilized the portal. Afraid of losing the breakthrough, Ohnn walked into the portal, knocking himself out.
He woke up floating in a different dimension, which he assumed was Cloak’s dark dimension. Soon he figured out that he’d been sent to a different dimension with an infinite number of portals surrounding him.
Ohnn found his way back to the lab where he discovered that his body had gone through a drastic change. The portals from the other dimension had adhered to his skin covering him in black spots. He quickly realized the spots were portable space warps and he figured he could use the abilities to defeat any opponent, becoming Spot.
His first confrontation was with Spider-Man and Black Cat who came to confront Kingpin, but were met by the new villain. Spider-Man laughed when Spot introduced himself and Spot responded by winning the fight. He lost their second fight, however, when Spider-Man tricked him into throwing too many spots and leaving himself defenseless.
Spot has gone on to work with other supervillains on multiple teams. He formed the short-lived team, Spider-Man Revenge Squad, with Gibbon, Grizzly, and Kangaroo, and was part of Hammerhead’s army during Civil War: War Crimes. Spot was in MODOK’s 11 as part of the team that tried to steal a weapon known as Hypernova and he joined the Hood’s crime syndicate in the Dark Reign storyline. For Origin of the Species Spot was part of Doctor Octopus’ supervillain team. One of his recent appearances was as a member of the Sinister Six who tried to steal a SHIELD Helicarrier.
