In 1984, Galoob toy manufacturer introduced the fantasy style toy line Golden Girl and the Guardians of the Gemstones. The toy line followed the Guardians (who gain strength and skills from special gemstones) as they protect the Kingdom of Argonia from the Forces of Evil.
The line consisted of 11 action figures that were 6” tall, had five points of articulation, rooted hair, and legs that could bend. The Guardians were Golden Girl, Jade, Onyx, Rubee, and Saphire, and the Forces of Evil were the Dragon Queen, Moth Lady, Vultura, and Wild One. The female-led toy line featured two male characters, Prince Kroma on the side of the heroes, and Ogra who allied with the villains.
Each figure came with a cape, a comb, a headpiece, weapon, and a shield with an embedded gemstone. The line included three waves of alternate costumes for the nine female characters. The Evening Enchantment line had gowns, the Festival Spirit wave had shiny outfits, and the Forest Fantasy line were rustic outfits.
The line expanded with Golden Girl’s unicorn, Olympia, and Dragon Queen’s horse, Shadow, which could be purchased separately or in deluxe sets that included chariots. Galoob also released the Palace of Gems castle playset, four Dream Tents, and a collector’s cast to store the figures.
Outside of the action figures and related pieces, Galoob sold a 3-D Colorforms playset, board game, jigsaw puzzle, stamp set, calendar, Find Your Own Fate books, and story books. The non-playable items included a Golden Girl Halloween costume, metallic brooches that represented the five heroes, a lunchbox, cups, and a sleeping bag.
