Quantcast

When you strap on a shield and stand for justice, of course you’re going to have a roster of enemies. Since his inception, Captain America has faced off with numerous deadly foes. One such enemy was made up of several fiendish villains, do you know who this is?

The original Serpent Squad, created by writer Steve Englehart, made their debut appearance in Captain America #163 (July 1973). The initial Squad was founded by Jordan Stryke, aka Viper after he escaped from prison with his brother, the Eel, and Cobra. Both Viper and Eel had previously been involved in the Cowled Commander, which ultimately led to their defeat and imprisonment by Captain America and Falcon. After enlisting Cobra and escaping, this Squad set their sights on ruining Cap’s reputation using false advertisements. Unfortunately, he caught onto their scheme and sent the trio back to prison. Later on, Madame Hydra assassinated Viper and took on his name. While Cobra challenged her right to lead, she did convince Eel and Princess Python to follow her as a new Serpent Squad. While working alongside the warlord Krang, this Squad attempted to raise the lost continent Lemuria. After being ambushed by Cap, Eel and Princess Python were defeated. Meanwhile, Cobra double-crossed Viper to side with Cap, a decision that resulted in Cobra being shot.

A third Serpent Squad – under the employ of Roxxon Oil executive Hugh Jones – was later made up of Sidewinder, Anaconda, Black Mamba, and Death Adder. While attempting to retrieve the Serpent Crown, an intense battle ensued between the Squad and Thing, Stingray, and Triton. Although they managed to complete their task for Jones, the Squad later served as freelance mercenaries instead. They were later invited to join the criminal organization, the Serpent Society, along with former Squad members, Cobra and Princess Python. As the Serpent Society was active, a new Serpent Squad appeared in Las Vegas. This new group – made up of Copperhead, Fer-de-Lance, Puff Adder, and Black Racer – mainly committed acts of terrorism and theft in various casinos. Following their defeat and imprisonment by Cap, Sidewinder invited them to join the Serpent Society. Unfortunately, they were under the employ of the Viper, and she used them to commence her takeover of the Serpent Society.

The latest Serpent Squad is currently made up of Sin, a new Viper, the Eel, and Cobra. Under the orders of the Red Skull, they attacked the White House and were ultimately defeated by the new Captain America. Much like how a snake sheds its skin, the Serpent Squad continues to shed members and create new alliances. Despite the continual changes, one thing remains constant: you don’t want to mess with the Squad.
