Prices are updated, reports are in, articles are written, and The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #54 is off to the printer. As the Bible of comic collecting, once again the Guide is filled with important information on the hobby.

The 54th edition of the Guide boasts four covers on its regular volume and two showcased on The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman brings the Heroes in the Half Shell to the cover to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Artist Michael Wm. Kaluta returns to The Shadow with another masterpiece for the Guide. It will also feature Brian Pulido’s Lady Death and Billy Tucci’s Shi as they celebrate their respective 30th anniversaries on two covers that match up to form one larger image.

“Ever since Bob Overstreet started getting original art with CBPG #4, doing a Guide cover became a bucket list item for many artists. It’s always exciting to see how different creators respond to the challenge of living up to a roster of talent that includes Joe Kubert, Will Eisner, Carl Barks, Wally Wood, Alex Schomburg, Murphy Anderson, Alex Ross, Joe Jusko, Amanda Conner, Walter Simonson, and so many other greats,” Gemstone Publishing President J.C. Vaughn said. “This year, it’s safe to say that Kevin Eastman, Michael Kaluta, and Billy Tucci met that challenge and then some!”

Each edition will be offered in hardcover ($44.95) and soft cover ($34.95). In its pages, this edition spotlights the 40th anniversary of the Turtles and the 30th anniversaries of Lady Death and Shi, provides a broad overview of Charlton Comics, digs deeper into the Platinum Age, and spotlights The Shadow.

As if covers by Eastman, Kaluta, and Tucci aren’t enough, Aaron Lopresti (Garbage Man) dives headlong into his interpretation of the Phantom Lady and Dean Haspiel (The Fox) teams up Fantomah with Wonderman and The Human Bomb as Gemstone remembers the Golden Age with the covers of The Big, Big Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #54. This oversized, limited edition version of the Guide ($59.95) features just the pricing from the standard editions of the book, with none of the articles, ads, or other features. It is square bound, and features larger print.

“Aaron Lopresti was one of an elite cadre of artists who have done two Overstreet covers in the same year, and one of them was our first Overstreet Advisors Exclusive cover for CBPG #52. His Golden Age Phantom Lady cover for Big, Big #54 is another tremendous piece, something that at this point I have to say we fully expected,” Vaughn said.

“Dean Haspiel, whose work on Archie’s The Fox (in addition to his creator-owned material) was a truly charming dose of fun, gave us a tremendous Golden Age team-up on our second cover for Big, Big #54. It captures some of that same vibe we saw in The Fox, but he also added in a bit of unique flavoring,” he said.

The Bible of serious comic book collectors, dealers, and historians since it was first published in 1970, The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide is released each July by Gemstone Publishing. Compiled by founder Robert M. Overstreet with contributions from an extensive roster of Overstreet Advisors, the Guide offers insight into the complex and exciting comic book market.

From their humble black and white, slightly oversized debut four decades ago, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have reigned supreme in comic books, video games, cartoons, feature films, action figures, and more. Since their inception, they have become a multi-billion dollar economic force.

While the pulp era and paperback novels of The Shadow brought fans the work of many highly acclaimed artists, in the world of comic books it’s difficult to imagine an illustrator who could be more associated with the character than Michael Wm. Kaluta. His 1970s DC Comics run with Denny O’Neil (along with later work at Marvel and Dark Horse) is definitive for many, and we expect that his powerful new piece, colored by Alex Sinclair, will be accorded the same praise.

Icons of the 1990s and the modern, creator-owned comics, Brian Pulido’s Lady Death and Billy Tucci’s Shi celebrate their 30th anniversaries in 2024, and The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #54 will put them front and center with individual covers that combine to form one larger image. Tucci and colorist Wes Hartman delivered the art of these two powerful characters.

This year’s cover artists join a roster of amazing talent more than five decades deep as the Guide celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first edition with original cover art, CBPG #4 with Don Newton’s take on the JSA. Since then, cover artists have included Joe Kubert, Will Eisner, Carl Barks, Wally Wood, C.C. Beck, Joe Simon, Mark Chiarello, Darwyn Cooke, Adam Hughes, Dan Jurgens, Joe Jusko, J. Scott Campbell, Greg Land, Cary Nord, Jim Steranko, Rob Liefeld, Howard Chaykin, Ryan Sook, Alan Davis, Tony Daniel, Todd McFarlane, Denys Cowan, Don Newton, Alex Schomburg, L.B. Cole, John Romita, Sr., John Romita, Jr., Walter Simonson, J.G. Jones, Butch Guice, Alex Ross, Murphy Anderson, John K. Snyder III, and Amanda Conner, among others.
