During the first Pop, Rock ‘N New Year’s Evil special event and convention, Scoop stopped by Terrifier actor David Howard Thornton’s table. He talked about the highly anticipated sequel, his reaction to their extremely successful crowdfunding campaign, the unique convention experience, and his future plans.
Scoop: Are you having a good time this weekend?
David Howard Thornton (DHT): I’m having a great time. Lots of fun.
Scoop: I said “this weekend” because I’m so used to saying that at conventions, but this is a totally different experience.
DHT: Yeah, it’s just like a big, huge party and a little bit of a convention, I guess you could say.
Scoop: Have you ever done a show like this where you have the overnight party activities?
DHT: Not in this regard. I’ve done a lot of conventions where we’ve had parties, but this is more like a party with a small convention. It’s a little bit of a reverse of it, so that’s kind of cool.
Scoop: You were at Pop, Rock ‘N Horror last spring. What do you like about this show?
DHT: Oh, it’s a nice, smaller convention, so it’s more intimate. You can hang out with the guests more, that’s what I enjoy about it.
Scoop: What kind of comments do you get from Terrifier fans when they come up to your table?
DHT: Oh they hate it! [laughs] I’m kidding. Everybody loves it. It’s very flattering comments. I can’t complain. I’m honored that everybody loves the movie as much as they do.
Scoop: The Indiegogo campaign for Terrifier 2 hit, I believe, 400% of the goal.
DHT: Yeah, our original goal was only supposed to be $50,000 and we hit that in less than three hours. By the next day we were already at 200% of our goal, we had made $100,000. By the end of it we’d gotten way up there to around $200,000.
Scoop: You obviously hit the regular goals, what about your stretch goals?
DHT: We exceeded everything we set on there. Can’t complain. The fans are awesome.
Scoop: What was the conversation like between you and Damien Leone when you were watching those numbers go up?
DHT: The funny thing is that we were going to Seattle that weekend to do an Atmos [FX Digital Decorations] project for those Halloween displays. So we were checking the numbers constantly going, “Oh my God, do you believe this?!” We were very excited.
Scoop: Can you tease anything about Terrifier 2?
DHT: Well, it’s going to be bigger and better. I recently just filmed a really big kill scene, which I think is going to rival the hacksaw scene, just in sheer brutality. I think people are going to say, “You’re mean. You’re very, very mean, Art.” Yes, I am. [laughs] It’s going to be a fun scene. I’d say Terrifier 2 is going to be bigger and better. This one is a little more of a narrative story, so a lot more plot is involved this time around. We introduced Art in the first one, now we’re building the world around him and seeing how he impacts that world more.
Scoop: Are we going to learn more about Art, or will he still be a mystery?
DHT: We’ll drop little clues here and there, but we’re still keeping his backstory a mystery.
Scoop: You have Felissa Rose in the movie, which is extremely cool.
DHT: Yeah, she makes a fun little cameo. She and Tamara Glynn both have fun cameos.
Scoop: Can we expect to see any other horror icons?
DHT: Not that I know of yet, but you never know.
Scoop: What else are you working on?
DHT: I’m going to be working on another film called Little Darling, which is kind of like Christine meets Little Shop of Horrors. I have small, little fun part in that. I’m going to be working on another horror film that some of the people involved in Terrifier with Fuzz on the Lens Productions. It’s called Stream, which we’re hoping is going to become another franchise as well. I wish I could say more about that one, but I’m under contract not to say anything. It’s a cool idea and we’re hoping to get some other horror icons involved in that as well. It’s exciting.
Scoop: Do you have a convention schedule planned for the spring?
DHT: I do, I have several. I’m going to be doing New Jersey Horror Con in Atlantic City in March, I’m going to be doing Astronomicon in Michigan in February, going to be doing Texas Frightmare as well. There are a few more, I’m just blanking right now. [laughs] I have a lot coming up.
Scoop: Any last words for Terrifier fans?
DHT: Oh, just stay tuned. You’re going to see some amazing things from Art. I think Terrifier 2 is going to blow Terrifier 1 out of the water.
Scoop: Wow. Thank you.
DHT: You’re welcome.
