Nintendo released plenty of new information about the highly-anticipated upcoming release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, during a special Direct presentation on February 20, 2020. The 27-minute video went into great detail on new features that fans can expect from this new entry into the Animal Crossing franchise.

Multiplayer functionality was discussed at length, with special attention given to how up to four people can be playing on the same Switch system at the same time. Up to eight players total can share an island together, building it up into a thriving community.

Players will now have the ability to modify their own community as they see fit in ways never seen before in an Animal Crossing title. These abilities include landscaping, such as digging out cliffs and even expanding rivers, lakes, and waterfalls; players can also add paths around their growing towns however they’d like. Players can also now choose where specifically their animal neighbors will be able to live – previous titles in the series have had houses pop up at random on the map, which has been a frequent annoyance to players who want to design their town down to every detail.

Other details revealed included amiibo functionality, including the reintroduction of the Animal Crossing amiibo cards, crossover play with the mobile game Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, new characters, and more.
