No/One, the crime drama comic series and accompanying audio drama podcast, is being adapted as a feature film. The news came during Image Comics’ Massive-Verse panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
The comic by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, and Geraldo Borges begins in 2022 when No/One, a hacktivist vigilante, revealed the secrets of powerful, corrupt individuals in Pittsburgh. It led to copycat vigilantes, murders, fear-induced chaos in the city, and the mystery over No/One’s identity. An ensemble cast of characters stars in the story, including journalists, police officers, politicians, and influential citizens of the Steel City.
The audio drama Who is No/One is a scripted podcast that expands on the story, featuring the voices of Rachael Leigh Cook, Patton Oswalt, and Todd Stashwick.
The movie, I Am No/One will be presented as a true crime found footage film. It will be told via interviews, phone and drone footage, news coverage, and first person GoPro and helmet videography from No/One. I Am No/One is the final chapter in the multimedia story.
Black Market Narrative studio and ZQ Entertainment development and production company are teaming on the film. Comic creators Higgins and Buccellato are writing the script and producing, and Higgins will also direct. It is also produced by ZQ Entertainment’s Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Late Night with the Devil), Ara Keshishian, and Petr Jákl, and executive producer Stuart Manashil.
“Unconventional storytelling makes for the most compelling narratives, particularly when it comes to film. Even when playing within the rules of genre convention, audiences want to be surprised. They deserve it,” Schneider said. “I Am No/One being structured as a documentary, that is also in-universe with the comic and podcast, is something that has never been done before. And that alone is incredibly exciting to me.”
“As both a storyteller and a world-builder, immersion is incredibly important to me,” Higgins said. “From day one, when Brian and I embarked on this journey nearly three years ago, we planned this multi-narrative approach in a way that would allow us to play to the strengths of our favorite mediums, designing a story that – while standing on its own in each format – became incredibly additive when experiencing all aspects of it together. I am incredibly excited to make my feature-film directing debut on a project so intensely personal and that speaks to the type of boundary-pushing, outside the box storytelling that I pride myself on trying to achieve.”
“This film is a culmination of over three years of meticulous planning and world building and I am so excited to be embarking on the final leg of this journey,” Buccellato said. “Executing a superhero murder mystery across multiple mediums is the biggest creative swing we’ve ever taken. We’re proud that each element stands on its own, and can’t wait to bring it all together for a truly one of a kind storytelling experience.”
A collected edition of the 10-issue comic, 10-episode audio drama, and all of the additional in-universe material will be released in November 2024.
