Get ready for spies and sparkle, mystery and mayhem in Agent Cupcake. Oni Press described the middle grade graphic novel as “perfect for fans of Mac B. Kid Spy and Spy School.” It will arrive in stores in November 2025.
Miguel Mangayayam is a 12-year-old who loves mystical beasts and knows everything about mermaids, dragons, and other magical creatures. Naturally, he is very excited when he is chosen by the Mystical Beasts Bureau (MBB) to become their first human spy and is partnered with the unicorn superspy Agent Cupcake. When they learn that unicorns are losing their magical powers, Miguel and Agent Cupcake must go up against a mega corporation that may be stealing the magic.
The book was created by co-writers Mel Hilario and Lauren Davis, and artist Katie Longua, the team known as Triple Dream Comics. They previously collaborated on the computer science graphic novel, Debian Perl, Digital Detective.
“As people who grew up on media like Sesame Street, Schoolhouse Rock, and Wishbone, we’ve always believed that curiosity, imagination, and whimsy should be part of learning,” Hilario said.
“Agent Cupcake blends real world knowledge about secret messages, social engineering, spyware, and lock picking with a world where a mermaid can run a spy agency, a griffin can help you break into a safe, and unicorns use their magic to craft horrifyingly cute plushies,” Davis said.
“At the same time, it’s a very human story about learning how to fail, transforming passion into action, and figuring out where you fit in,” Longua said.
