The young witch Claire and her kitty familiar, Edgar, from The Summoning animated short are improving their magical abilities in the new graphic novel. Published by Oni Press, The Summoning Vol. 1: The Art of the Craft is a coming of age story by Elyse Castro (Go! Cartoons).
“For as long as I can remember my imagination has been home to the whimsical, witchy world of Ridgewood,” Castro said. “Where Claire and Edgar experiment with magik, eat tasty treats and accidentally annoy their fluffy neighbor. It’s nearly been 8 years since I was able to bring some of this world to you all through The Summoning cartoon short, and I’m ‘over the broom’ to share one of Claire and Edgar’s most important adventures with you all in The Art of the Craft. Please enjoy, and remember – do no harm.”
Claire uses magic to manifest things, like creating art that comes to life, but she wants her skill set to grow. After learning that the Ridgewood Coven magical institution is accepting new students, she is determined to gain admittance. She will need the help of Edgar, her rabbit neighbor Flufftops, her magical rival Swan, and other new friends to summon ghosts, battle trolls, and show off other skills. But while she’s trying to get in to the magical school, secrets of the Ridgewood Coven are revealed.
“I was immediately impressed by Elyse’s charming and rich world starring the gentle Claire and her best bud, the hilariously charming Edgar,” Editor in Chief Sierra Hahn said. “The Summoning is a story of friendship and wonder, where Claire will face numerous challenges to overcome her own insecurities and discover what it truly means to be herself as an artist.”
The Summoning Vol. 1: The Art of the Craft will arrive in comic book stores on October 7, 2025.
