After fighting through demons that were pouring into Sunnydale, Buffy and Angel entered the Hellmouth to stop Drusilla from unleashing something even worse, the thing “beyond sin, beyond death, the thing darkness fears.”

In Hellmouth #2 (of 5), Buffy and Angel face Ulfreth, a change demon that can take the form of people they know. Buffy and Angel are separated during the fight and dealt emotional blows by the people Ulfreth uses. Despite this, Angel does learn an important piece of information about their current situation and its endgame.

This installment of the crossover, written by Jordie Bellaire and Jeremy Lambert, is completely focused on Buffy and Angel, as a reimagined early meeting of the two. At this point, Buffy doesn’t know that Angel is a vampire, so she makes some amusing assumptions about him. More than that, it’s interesting seeing them interact without their deep, complicated shared history that played out on TV. The arc itself is pretty darn scary and is setting up for what should be one heck of a battle.
