The newest in IDW’s Goosebumps series, based on the stories of R.L. Stine, returns to one of the author’s most popular spots: Fever Swamp. It starts when Blake, a bored preteen is sent to spend the summer with her aunt at Fever Swamp. All Blake wants to do is play her favorite video game, but her aunt insists that her niece go out and meet some new kids.

The first one she meets is a fellow gamer named Lily who immediately brings out Blake’s competitive side. Lily convinces Blake to go deep into Fever Swamp to explore the murky depths. The girls quickly discover that the stories about Fever Swamp are true: there really are werewolves prowling through the dark forest. Now, they must face a night isolated in the woods with monsters, but what Blake soon learns, is that monsters can come in many forms.

This new adaptation of The Werewolf of Fever Swamp is fun and thrilling, with some suspenseful scenes and thoughtful moments. Writer Marieke Nijkamp crafted an exciting tale from beginning to end. Each issue is equally strong, complete with twists and jump scares as the girls navigate the frightening situation. Artist Yasmin Florez Montanez set the scene very well, illustrating a cozy small town situated next to the dark, spooky Fever Swamp. The werewolves are large and scary, though not too scary for the intended young audience.

IDW has had a solid track record on the Goosebumps books and this one continues that trend.
