In the future, the World Finance League has created a new system whereby the richest people on Earth are chosen at random to donate half of their wealth to the rest of the world. If they refuse, they are forced to fight other super-rich people to the death in the gladiator style event, Free For All. The reigning champion, who still refuses to donate half his wealth, is real estate mogul Ted Brooks. His next opponent is tech company giant Luella Dominguez, who also happens to be Ted’s ex-business partner and more importantly, his ex-wife.
There’s a lot going on in Free For All, which is written and drawn by Patrick Horvath. It confronts the greed among the wealthiest people who, in this case, would rather face death than share their money with those who need it. The one-shot shows how people get excited to witness violence, becoming numb to the combatants’ deaths. It even taps into the bloodlust that some Free For All competitors feel when they’re in the ring. It’s bold, satirical, and full of action.
