After over $2.5 trillion invested in the stock markets was wiped out Monday, bidders flocked to Golden Age comic books on ComicConnect.com, the company said following the first three days of its Event Auction.

“With the highly volatile and totally unpredictable stock market experiencing panic sell-offs, investors felt far more secure in diversifying their portfolios with blue-chip comics,” said Vincent Zurzolo, Chief Operating Officer. “We’ve enjoyed helping our clients find secure investments that have been proven producers year after year.”

The recently discovered Atlantic City Collection, comprised of original owner Golden Age comics, produced new records on Action Comics #10 CGC 9.0 ($258,000), Action Comics #13 CGC 9.2 ($185,000), Action Comics #19 CGC 9.4 ($79,000), Action Comics #20 CGC 9.0 ($60,000), Action Comics #31 ($18,900), Captain America #1 CGC 9.2 ($343,057), Detective Comics #33 CGC 9.2 ($194,000), Detective Comics #36 CGC 8.5 ($44,500), and Flash #1 CGC 9.0 ($168,000).

“The bluest of the blue chip books, Action Comics #1 CGC 4.5, hammered at $345,000 as the top book in this record-breaking Event Auction,” said Rob Reynolds, Director of Consignments. “We’ve brokered 16 copies of Action Comics #1 in the past three years alone and that is more than every other auction house in the world combined.”

Original art sales included a Bob Kane recreation of Batman #1 for $8,600, an early Kubert page from Flash Comics #72 for $5,050, a WrightsonSwamp Thing #8 page for $5,111, and a Spirit Magazine #5 cover for $3,300.

ComicConnect.com’s summer Event Auction comes to a close the evening of Friday, August 12. Additional details from the final days of the sale should be available in next week’s Scoop.

In the meantime, the company’s August Monthly Auction is already accepting bids with more listings added daily including comic books from the Walter Cronkite III collection. The auction closes August 29 - 31, 2011.
