In their current auction, Hake’s Americana & Collectibles are selling a large selection of comic books, featuring some major keys for discerning collectors.

One significant highlight is a copy of More Fun Comics #52 CGC 3.0, with the origin and first appearance of the Spectre. This key Golden Age DC book from February 1940 has a story by Jerry Siegel and Al Sulman with cover and art by Bernard Baily and additional art by John Lehti, Joe Sulman, and George Papp.

The Spectre was created by Siegel (co-creator of Superman) and Baily (co-creator of Hourman). He started out as Jim Corrigan, a tough cop who was murdered, but his spirit refused to move on to the afterlife. Instead, he became the hero Spectre, with the ability to warp reality, as well as super-strength and immortality.

In addition to his solo adventures, Spectre was a founding member of the Justice Society of America, the first major team in comics history, alongside the Atom, Doctor Fate, the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Hourman, and the Sandman.

This fresh to the market comic comes from a recently discovered original-owner Golden Age comic book collection, which was first purchased off the sales racks in the ’30s and ’40s.

More Fun Comics #52 introduces one of the true powerhouses of the DCU, Jim Corrigan as the Spectre. His adventures during the Golden Age, both solo and with the JSA, have entertained comic fans for generations,” Hake’s Senior Cataloger Mike Bollinger said. “Given the longevity and importance of the character within the pages of DC Comics, any time this issue comes to market it excites collectors. We here at Hake’s are just as excited to see where the bidding takes this historic comic.”

Hake’s is offering many more comics in their auction, featuring Golden to Modern Age titles that have been graded and certified. Auction #223 closes on Tuesday through Thursday, March 13-15. To view all of the auction listings and bid on these items, visit hakes.com.
