Note: This article contains spoilers from Stranger Things season three.

When the third season of Stranger Things ended, it gave us a potential new location in Russia, and the apparent death of grumpy but lovable Chief Hopper. But, as the finale ended in a hidden facility in Russia that had a potential gate to the Upside down, one containment cell was housing someone called “the American.” This led fans to hope that the Duffer Brothers had kept Hopper alive.

Fans didn’t have to wait until the show returned to find out the answer. In the first teaser trailer for Stranger Things 4, it is revealed that Jim Hopper is alive! The teaser titled “From Russia with love…” pans over the cold, gray snow-covered land as a group of prisoners construct new railroad tracks. One is none other than Hawkins’ Chief Hopper.

“We’re excited to officially confirm that production on Stranger Things 4 is now underway – and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper!” the Duffer Brothers said in a statement. “Although it’s not all good news for our ‘American’; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human…and other. Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything. Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet, and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime – pray for the American.”
