The Walking Dead spinoff that was set to follow Carol and Daryl is doing some reshuffling. Carol actress Melissa McBride has officially exited the series and the show will now focus on Norman Reedus as crossbow wielding Daryl Dixon.

“Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe,” an AMC spokesperson said in a statement. “Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spinoff focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year. Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future.”

The spinoff series was originally announced in September 2020 when AMC dropped the news that the main show would end in an expanded season 11. The plan was for the Carol and Daryl series to show the pair on the road in a tonal shift from the original show. McBride’s exit could mean that a different surviving character goes on the road with Daryl, an entirely new character/characters, or any number of other possibilities.

Also in the works is a spinoff that will see Lauren Cohan’s Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan heading to New York.
