Esquire Comics and Socal Comics have announced they are offering a new
find, which they have dubbed "Hollywood Hills Collection." Mark S. Zaid of
EsquireComics.com and Jamie Newbold of Southern California Comics reported they
discovered the collection, which contains, "some of the best and highest graded
Silver Age Marvels that have been seen in many years," the said in a press
release.
"The large Hollywood sign parked upon the hills of Tinseltown is
a familiar sight to most everyone. From those hills came such movie stars as
Greta Garbo, Clark Cable, Marilyn Monroe and Harrison Ford. The world watches
with delight the lives that percolate throughout Hollywood as they pulsate with
celebration and scandal," they said.
"Forty years ago, from late 1965 to
early 1968, a young collector would purchase multiple copies of each issue of
such titles as
Amazing Spider-Man,
Daredevil,
Fantastic
Four,
Tales of Suspense and
X-Men. One copy would be read, and
the others would be meticulously placed away for safe-keeping. Ultimately
approximately 1,000 books were amassed, of which nearly 400 have been acquired
by EsquireComics and SOCAL (about half of those have been CGC certified and the
remaining books were retained by the owner's son for sale on eBay). The result
is as breathtaking to comic collectors in the present as Jayne Mansfield was to
the young men of that day," the press release stated.
"While I am
certainly far more of a Golden Age dealer/collector, I was star struck with the
high quality of the grades and pages of these beautiful Silver Age books and
couldn't pass them up. If collectors are looking for the best original and
un-manipulated copies these Hollywood Hill books are for you," Zaid said in the
release.
"The collection was carefully scrutinized and obtained through
constant negotiations over a two month period. Impressively, the owner's form of
storage prevented paper discoloration. Those received from CGC to date are
near-perfect comics with "white pages". This is unparalleled for such a large
collection of 40 year-old books," Newbold said.
The collection includes
the following comics which have been CGC certified:
Amazing Spider-Man
#34 9.6,
Amazing Spider-Man #43 9.6,
Avengers #42 9.4,
Daredevil #13 9.6,
Fantastic Four #57 9.6,
Tales of
Suspense #73 9.6,
X-Men #17 9.6 and
X-Men #24 9.8. Many of
the books fall within the 9.2 - 9.6 range.
"These comic books were very
fresh with that 'new snap' feel to them. The original owner must have really
loved these beauties to keep them in such nice shape," CGC President and Primary
Grader Steve Borock said in the release.
"Some of
these copies will grade right up there with others of the same issues from
recognized pedigree collections."
The books will be available for sale
to the general public beginning December 1, 2006, simultaneously at
www.EsquireComics.com and
www.SocalComics.com.
